Accepted as a species by the World Checklist and Bibliography of Fagales (1998) and by Valencia-A (2004). Treated as a synonym of Q. xalapensis Bonpl. (1809) by Romero-R (2006). This taxon is appears to be distinct and is maintained as a species here.
