Nomenclature Note:
The taxon has been published with different spellings:
1864: De Candolle described a specimen collected in Karabagh by the Hungarian pharmacist Johann Nepomuk Szovits as a variety of Q. robur subsp. sessiliflora, which he calls var. szovitzii (Prodromus Vol. 16 pt 2 p. 9). On p. 43, however, he referred to it as var. szovitsii, changing the spelling.
1886: Wenzig raises the taxon to species status, as Q. szowitsii, again changing the spelling, though he cites De Candolle’s basionym.
1890: Gandoger publishes Q. szovitsii, citing the same specimen cited by Wenzig. Gandoger’s whole work is suppressed, so this name is nom. inval.
1903: Zabel determines that the taxon is the hybrid between Q. macranthera and Q. sessiliflora. Zabel cites De Candolle’s basionym, again changing the spelling of the name to scovitzii.
De Candolle's original spelling is retained.
