Etymology:
The epithet runcinata is Latin from runcinare, meaning 'to plane', as a carpenter planes wood. In reference to the margin with teeth pointing away from the apex.

Basionym: Q. rubra var. runcinata A. DC. (1864). Sargent's publication is a validation of Quercus runcinata (A.DC.) Engelm., Trans. Acad. Sci. St. Louis 3(4): 542 (1877), nom. inval.
