Accepted as a species by the World Checklist and Bibliography of Fagales (1998), thought by Valencia-A (2004) to be a probable synonym of Q. conspersa Benth. (1842), but here treated as a synonym of Q. xalapensis Bonpl. (1809) following Romero-R (2006)
